מי שראה אמש את התכנית בבי.בי.סי  העולמי שנקראת World Challenge – שמביאה 12 פרויקטים להעצמה קהילתית וסביבתית מרחבי העולם, יכול היה לראות שם כתבה בת כ 12 דקות על comet me – ארגון שהקימו אלעד אוריין ונועם דותן, שמקים פאנלים סולריים וטורבינות רוח להפקת חשמל עבור הבדואים בדרום הר חברון. נועם ואלעד, שעובדים עם קבוצת הכפרים של אהוד קרייניס ועם הרבה מתנדבים וארגונים שותפים מהארץ ומהעולם, עושים בהר חברון חיבור מרגש. מצד אחד קידום אנרגיה סולארית, שהיא כמובן הפתרון הטבעי, הפשוט וההגיוני ביותר לשאלת האנרגיה במזרח התיכון, ומרכיב מרכזי בהתמודדות עם משבר האקלים. מצד שני עבודה מול קהילה במצוקה שסבלה מעוולות הכיבוש  בצורה קיצונית ומקוממת ביותר. יושבי המערות והאוהלים גורשו פעם ראשונה מגבעות ערד ב 1948 ופעם שניה מאיזורי המחיה שלהם באיזור יאטה שמדרום לחברון בשנות השמונים, כשאדמותיהם נלקחו לצרכי התנחלויות. קוי המתח הגבוה שמובילים חשמל להתנחלויות מזמזמים מעל לראשיהם, אבל גישה לרשת – או למים – אין להם. במקום זה הם סובלים מהצקות המתנחלים, כולל פגיעה ברכוש בגוף ובמקרה אחד גם בנפש.

הצטרפתי לאלעד ונועם ואחרים פעם אחת לכמה ימים בקיץ 2008 ופעם שניה לכמה ימים בקיץ 2009, לעזור בהתקנת פאנלים סולאריים להפקת חשמל ליד צריפים ואוהלים ומעל למערות המגורים. את נהרת האושר שראיתי על פני נשים בדואיות מבוגרות, שאחרי עשרות שנים של חיים לאור עששית הנפט ומדורות עצים עשנות יכלו לראושנה להפעיל את מתג החשמל ולהדליק את אפלולית המערה בנורת פי.אל, לא אשכח לעולם.

כדאי לראות הוידיאו וכדאי עוד יותר להיכנס לאתר ה BBC ולהצביע בעד הפרויקט שלהם כדי לעזור לו לזכות בתואר. זה יכול לעשות הבדל עצום לפרויקט שעד עתה גייס כספים בקצב מצומצם. וקומט חזק יותר יוכל להחיב את פעילותו לקהילות בדואיות נוספות בפזורה של הר חברון.

SOLAR AND WIND ENERGY FOR THE BEDOUINS SOUTH OF HEBRON

The BBC World’s World Challenge is a program that has 12 finalist projects of environmental innovation and community empowerment from all over the world. Those who watched it Sunday evening (November 8^th),  could see a 12 minute clip about Comet Me. Comet Me – Community, energy and sustainable development in the Middle East – is an organization established by Elad Orian and Noam Dotan. It works with the Villages Group of Ehud Kreinis, many volunteers and some partner organizations in Israel, Palestine and the International Community, to install solar panels and wind turbines for electricity in Bedouin communities south of Hebron in the West Bank.

Noam and Elad are creating a moving synergy. On the one hand, they push solar and wind energy, which are of course the natural, simple and commonsensical solution to the problem of energy in the Middle East as well as in poor community in many other regions. On the other hand, they help a disenfranchised community that suffered untold damage as a result of the occupation. These people, now occupying caves and tents and shacks, were driven off their land near Arad for the first time in 1948, and for a second time from land nearer their present locations that was grabbed for Jewish settlements in the 1980’s. The high voltage grid lines that supply electricity to the settlements hum above their heads. But access to the grid – or to the water pipes – is prohibited to them. Instead they are harassed by the settlers, who regularly damage their meagre possessions, sometimes injure them and on one case even took a life.

I joined Elad and Noam for a few days to help install solar panels south of Hebron for the first time in the summer of 2008 and then again in 2009. The happiness I saw on the face of elderly Bedouin women who, after decades of life illuminated by kerosene lamps and open fires could for the first time flick a switch and have their cave alight with energy efficient light bulbs is a sight I will cherish all my life.

It is worth your while to watch this video. Even more important  – go to the BBC site and vote for Comet Me in the Beeb’s contest. Winning this could make a world of difference for an organization that has so far raised money with some difficulty. And a stronger Comet Me will be able to expand its excellent activities to further villages further afield.

הוידיאו הזה מדלהי מספר את סיפור משבר האקלים מנקודת המבט של המדינות העניות.  עיר ענקית, מדינה אדירה, עוני רחב מימדים, תשתיות חלשות, יכולות מנהלתיות מוגבלות. כולם שם תלויים באקלים ובטבע בצורות שהמודרניזם הצליח לשכנע אותנו שעומדות לחלוף מן העולם. אבל הנה הטבע חוזר, ובגדול: המונסון המשתגע, הנהרות שיורדים מן ההימאליה מצטמצמים, והפרוגנוזה לדלהי פשוטה ומצמררת: 15 מיליון איש בלי מים – או עם מעט מים – בתוך עשור או שניים.

This video from Delhi offers a southern hemisphere perspective on the climate crisis. Huge city, vast country, widespread poverty, weak infrastructure, limited administrative capacities. Everyone in India depends on nature and climate, in ways modernization almost succeeded to convince us no longer existed. But nature is back with a vengeance: monsoon gone mad, rivers originating in the Himalayas shrinking, and a prognosis for Delhi that makes you shiver: 15 million with little or no water within a decade or two tops.
